Game Title: Avala      Reviewer: Mikayla R.

Tertris meets Mario in this geometric dash for survival!

Gameplay: The sky is falling, the sky is falling! Except, I don't remember the sky being made of giant blocks of different sizes, each with the intention of crushing you. In this game, not only is the sky trying to kill you in a fall of blocks very reminisent of tetris, but the ground is no longer safe either--it's lava! Simple as it is, you, the white block, must escape by climbing the blocks falling out of the air and stay ahead of the lava. Be careful--the blocks falling may very well land on top of you. But if you evade them long enough to land, you've got your next stepping stone away from death. Beat your score by staying alive longer.

This gameplay is simple, but the struggle is real. My heart pounded the moment I realized lava was filling up from the ground and I had to platform my way up these murder blocks to safety. If anything, this is a race for the ages, and only my experience with Mario kept me alive for the few seconds I did last. I love to see this kind of excitement stirred up from such simple mechanics--don't touch the floor; don't get crushed. That's what we call great gameplay!

Art/Music: The art, as you can imagine, is minimal. You're in a free white space with falling blocks, and though the blocks do have a recognizable twist (a stamp of approval in the form of a hole), they're generally blank canvases with a splash of color. The lava is also minimal, though less forgiveably. While blocks can get away with simpler design, the lava is so vague--just a rising, slightly see-through red color--that I didn't realize it was lava the first time I played. Perhaps even a brighter or more opaque red could have been better, but I would have liked to see a more threatening lava brought to the table. This would have brought the game's visuals to life.

Overall, this game is a solid 3 out of 5 game. If the visuals had been more stunning, or if this game had music at all, I might have given it higher, but its gameplay is certainly solid and earns it a decent grade. What do you guys think?
