Got Light?

Got Light?

Summary

Got Light? is a beautiful, unique puzzle game for iPad and iPhone that involves manipulating light, shadows, and color. In each of the 70+ levels, players arrange colored planets and stars to illuminate every planet in the correct color of light. Unlike most mobile games, Got Light? forces players to think in new and unique ways. It requires players to engage with their spatial intelligence, much like a Rubik’s Cube, but with lights and shadows. In addition to the challenge, Got Light? offers a beautiful visual experience; each puzzle forms a mesmerizing pattern of light and darkness. Got Light? was the Grand Prize Winner at the first annual iOS Game Development Competition at MIT, and is being published by Ben Reynolds.

Reviews

As the developer of Got Light?, I put a lot of time into making a game I would enjoy playing myself. In many ways, the game reflects who I am; a subtle blend of art and science; thoughtful; always up for a challenge. I love how the game can offer a mental challenge, but if you want you can also just sit back and enjoy the visuals.

Where did the idea come from?

I was inspired to make this idea while looking at a lava lamp, and thinking about the colored blobs of light floating up and down. Ever since I was young I’ve enjoyed drawing and painting, so I’ve always wanted to make a game about color mixing. I’m a big fan of science too, so I decided to set the game in outer space.

How do I design levels?

I built a tool that lets me design and test levels. Sometimes I start by designing the solution first, and then scrambling a few of the stars and planets to make it difficult. Then I’ll play the level and see if it needs to be easier or harder. Sometimes I design levels that follow a geometric pattern; other times I just try to make levels with clever solutions.

I hope you enjoy playing the game as much as I’ve enjoyed building it. Please let me know what you think about the game!

Thanks,
Ben Reynolds
