Half Life 2

Summary

Half Life 2 is a great first-person shooter game that takes place in a dystopian future with a medley of monsters to fight. You play as the mild mannered Gordon Freeman, who was in the wrong place at the wrong time and has to run from the oppressive police force and government, who want nothing more than to kill him. The popular meme is people waiting for Half-Life 3 because it has been hinted at multiple times but there is no groundbreaking evidence of it at this time.

I like this game because I have a natural tendency to enjoy first person shooter games. The first time I played Half Life 2 I was at a friends’ house and I bought the game for the both of us for less than five dollars. I distinctly remember getting to the same spot as him in the game, where you had to stay on top of a moving train to escape your captors. Before then, I had hardly played a game with ragdolling when you die, so when my character fell off the train and flew up, possibly to reach the stratosphere, I was rolling on the floor alongside my friend, laughing until I cried. A sense of enjoyment brought me to the game, and a sense of nostalgia brings me back to it. I like the fact that you play as a man who’d rather fight to escape than fight to kill, and in certain times you must do just that. Gordon Freeman is only one man, so he has to choose who to kill and run to escape the situation instead of Rambo-ing every last enemy. There are also environmental enemies, like headcrabs or radiated people. Explosives and situational dangers also await those with a less than careful eye, so the game can definitely keep you on your toes, which I definitely enjoy.

I do wish that the game were a little more expansive and have more easter eggs and little things that reward the investigative player though. If you could pick up a joke gun or an invincibility suit - just for a joke on a level or two - I think the game would be more more suited for me. I enjoy being able to have serious moments where every bullet counts, as well as times where I can run around as if I’m made of adamantite and just wreak havoc. Even though there is that tiny little drawback I feel like the game is better and more enjoyable than people give it credit for, so I happily give it a 4 out of 5 stars.
