In Mirror’s Edge, you play as Faith, the heroine. She lives in a dystopian world where the government monitors everything, and there is little to no privacy.  She is known as a “runner,” an elite group of people who can navigate the rooftops and run, jump, and climb where the need to go in order to get those messages where the need to be and when they need to be there. Faith’s job is to carry secret messages back and forth to the leaders of the rebels who wish to overthrow this government and give people more freedom. At the same time, the mayor running for office who shares the same beliefs as the rebels is assassinated, and Faith’s sister is the scapegoat. Now she takes the responsibility to find out what really happened to the mayor and clear her sister’s name, all while avoiding the police and the frightening falls that can be encountered.

There are many good things about Mirror’s Edge that go unnoticed or even worse, unappreciated. The game, while being a great free running/parkour-like game, is also extremely optimized for speed running. There are techniques which can allow double jumps or even glitches that will bypass whole levels in order to shave down the time. I love how smooth the running is, if you can memorize or even just familiarize yourself with a certain pathway or route, you can run it perfectly. The graphics of the game look nice for a game from 2008, it’s crisp and clean and from a distance, looks very detailed. The story in itself is good, with assassins, double-crossing, and surprises all to keep you enthralled. This game makes me want to go out and jump over something just to get a smidge of the feeling Faith must get on a run. The combat is good too, wallrun kicking, sliding punches, and knocking over unsuspecting policemen makes it so rewarding to play stealthily.

I do wish that the game was a little...more? The free running is great, and there are so many ways to get to where you need to go, which I love. Despite this, there isn’t much else. You can take the guns off of the guards and have a shootout, but that is lackluster. The game also has some annoying bugs and hitboxes so some jumps or landings will kill you half the time, when they should be relatively easy to hit. That being said, this game is still one I highly recommend, due to it’s really enjoyable free running and really good graphics for it’s time. I give this game a 4/5 for its lovely mechanics and gameplay, but dock a star because there’s no need to replay the game after you beat it, unless you strive to beat your times in levels.
