This game is the opposite of everything soothing and relaxing about most games I enjoy, but the hilarity that ensues is worth every bit of frustration.  Octodad is a game released by a group of student game developers by the name of Young Horses.  Unlike most free games, this game is not played in a browser.  It takes a simple download, but it’s completely free (you have to pay for its sequel, but I’m sure it’s well worth it).

The graphics for this game work well with the story and general ambiance of the game. It is 3D rendered with the ability to move anywhere—which can sometimes be a bad thing for Octodad. The first task they put you up to is learning how to walk around and pick things up.  It’s a short tutorial designed to help you understand the game, and it doesn’t take long to figure out that walking around and picking things up are basically the core of the game.  You are an octopus posing as a father, and this game takes the stealth aspect of remaining in secrecy to a whole new level.  The way you handle yourself around the house could give away the fact that you’re a sea-dwelling creature that just isn’t cut out for life on land.

The whole idea is hilarious, and the developers had a deep understanding of irony while creating the game.  It took me about twenty minutes to pick up a case of make-up.  As soon as I did, the bar that indicates my stealth shot up, warning me that my disguise was failing.  A prompt told me that dads don’t generally wear make-up, so I dropped it right away (as soon as I could remember how to drop things).  My character quickly made a list of things to do, and I was on my way into a game where simply walking to the door took an act of supreme coordination and a lot of laughter.
